The Essential Role of Background Vocalists

Recently, I had the honor of contributing alongside some incredible coaches and working background singers for an article in the Journal of Singing that was published for NATS (National Association of Singers) that focused on the often unseen, but essential, role of background vocalists in today’s music industry.

The article explored what it really takes to succeed as a background singer. Not just strong vocals, but adaptability, musicianship, emotional intelligence, and the ability to support the lead artist without ego. From live touring to studio sessions, background singers are asked to be vocal chameleons, blending, matching, adjusting styles, managing tech, and showing up consistently at a very high level.

Talent isn’t enough. Longevity comes from preparation, adaptability, vocal health, and being someone people want to work with again. Experience matters. Rest matters. Professionalism matters. And the singers who get called back are the ones who know how to support the artist and the room.

Talent opens the door. These skills keep it open.

What This Reinforces in Our Studio:

This article affirmed something we emphasize every day at the studio: training a singer isn’t just about sound, it’s about sustainability.

Background vocalists succeed when they understand their instrument, manage vocal load intelligently, adapt quickly, and show up prepared both vocally and mentally. The same skills that protect a touring background singer also build confident, reliable lead artists.

Healthy voices last longer. Prepared singers work more. That’s the goal.
